As always, the Lounge’s expertise is much appreciated. I guess I don’t understand pop3 either, because my two accounts that use it behave differently. On the next screen enter your email password: DONE You can now send and receive email. (IMAP) or 993 (POP3) (this depends on if you chose IMAP or POP3 in the screen before.) 3 Outgoing Mail Server Port: 465.

It was originally set up as IMAP, but with the referenced difficulties, I switched it to pop3.Īll said, I’d like to use IMAP, but I don’t understand it well enough to be confident in not losing something that I need later on. Setting up your E-Mail account in Outlook 365 or Outlook 2016 Office 365 Outlook E-Mail Settings for (POP3). I get an error that says the server can’t do that.Ĭomcast is a new account for me. That doesn’t seem to work with an IMAP message. With any pop3 message, I can use a rule to automatically move the message to the right spot. If I’m also monitoring gmail on the web, the message in the inbox goes away. Enable IMAP, as shown in the figure above or (if you want to configure outlook in pop then enable POP.) Click on Save changes and close your Gmail account. Click on Forward POP/IMAP option from the menu in the top. Right now, any gmail (IMAP) message I receive that I want to keep, I drag into a stored folder that’s in the main Outlook date file (pst). Go to Settings by clicking the gear icon below your profile pic. I haven’t been backing up the IMAP ost files, as I understand that’s pointless. I know that POP3 is old and typically not recommended, but I like controlling my files directly having them on my hard drive where I can back them up is comforting. I have both accounts set up to “keep a copy on the server.” I only access my msn.com messages from my PC, so I don’t know how Exchange handles deletions. If I delete something from comcast, it also gets deleted on my PC. If I delete something on my phone from CLink, it doesn’t seem affected on my PC. If I delete a gmail message from my phone, I can watch it disappear from my PC’s inbox. If I delete something from my phone or laptop, I don’t want it gone from my PC.

My PC has Office 2016, so I’m using Outlook 2016 on it. If you send an email to yourself in Outlook (through the Outlook Account you have setup for Gmail) it shows in Inbox AND Sent Items, in both Outlook and (pretty cool). You can allow either or both in Settings. Today, besides my PC, I have a laptop and a cell phone. You can use either IMAP or POP3 (in email client) to access your Gmail account. And use POP3 if: you are using one email client on one dedicated device (ie, your work computer at your office) you have a huge history of. I only had one PC, and I handled all my mails either with MS Outlook or Thunderbird. In short, use IMAP if: you check your emails from multiple devices (such as phone, computers, tablets, etc.) you want your device (s) to sync, including emails and any folder structure you have created.
